Stainless steel ins't really steel
The magnet test helps distinguish between stainless steel vs chromed steel. Knoll sold/sells the Brno chair in both chromed steel @ $1250 +- and stainless steel @ $2025+- (prices are based on full retail). Stainless is better for several reasons and therefore $800 more.
If it's stainless magnets won't stick*
* - although some grades of "stainless steel" contain enough ferritic material to weakly attract a magnet.

I do not want to...
contradict but Stainless steel is a steel. It is indeed an alloy (a combination of several metals in the same way as brass, bronze and most aluminums are alloys)In spite of the high chrome and nickel and sometime vanadium etc. content the largers part of the alloy is steel.
As far as the brno chair is concerned, yes the stainless will last longer and if it starts to show some discoloration it can easely be polished, but for the othodox amoung us, the originals were made of chromed steel....

I have both. I have kno...
I have both. I have knolls from the early 70's and they are stainless and
I have a later set that are chrome and steel (i will not call them stainless)
Correct me if i am wrong and i know someone will...
I believe all of the knolls from 1968, When Florance signed the licensing agreement with Mies were all Stainless Steel. I think they changed to a chrome option in the last 5 years, I think those bases are made in Italy while the Stainless are made in America ,
