I went and bought some "Mother's" metal polish at the Autozone. It is supposed to get rid of the milky crud and scratches. While it takes a little work, you would be shocked at how mice an H base looks after you polish it with this! I am almost to a mirror finish now, but I have a little while to go. It really looks like a million bucks. I think we are all used to seeing old cruddy bases. Because they are a dime a dozen no one seems willing to restore an H base. But if you did you would change your mind!
If you've seen a new "slice" chair (Paulin orange slice repro) by Modernica, the base is just that shiny. It actually looks expensive.
Agree
We have a dozen sideshells in assorted vivid colors (orange, yellow, red) and put them on new old stock high polish chrome H bases that were special ordered from Herman Miller. Very swank. I think the X or H base can be just as elegant as the eiffel or dowel. Just a different look. If you can't have that busy linear quality with a particular table, the simple 4 legs look just grand.
I've always preferred the H-base
The shell itself is such an elegant curvaceous form, that I think the clean linear form of the H-bases complements it best. The other bases all look much too fussy in my opinion, and like whitespike, I also shy away from the trendiness of them. I'm talking the old stock H-bases, though, I don't like the look of the stacking bases at all. I agree with LRF on that point...very commercial mass-production looking.
I'm going to save myself just one chair out of the big lot and I'm going to shine up the base using whitespike's suggestion. A bright orange chair on a shiny silver base sounds good to me!
I have the silver H bases on ...
I have the silver H bases on my side shells and think they look clean with the contract base table they sit around. Although I've noticed I have one that seems to have a longer "rake" than the other 2? Not sure which is the later size? The back legs come out further, maybe an inch or two. Enough to trip over at least! I think I might try to find one that matches the smaller footprint of the other two chairs.
I had an x base side shell on...
I had an x base side shell once. It was totally original. Since you can see a bit of underneath on these chairs, it was a great, clean look. I am with whitespike on the basic bases. The chairs are such a perfectly cleanly reduced form, the dowels and eifels seem way too fussy and distracting. Its almost like folks aren't comfortable with that amount of reduction in their design.
I bet is was easier to manufacture...
The welding of the X would needs be very precise and not easy to brace aginst itself. The interlocking bits of the H where you attach to the shock mount sort of form a natural support for it to hold together whilst welding it. I still do like the H best, tho...clean simple and classic!
