I have a bunch of the Eva Zeisel "Tomorrow's Classic" dinnerware made by Hallcraft, as well as huge amount of Russel Wright "Residential" melmac dinnerware from both Northern and Home Decorators.
When I moved into my (new) house with a dishwasher (never had one at the old house), I broke down and washed all of my Zeisel and Wright in the dishwasher without any apparent damage. (It was real NICE to see how clean the Zeisel got in the dishwasher!)
I have dishwashed the melmac many times since, and even though my pieces are not in mint condition - scratches, etc. - I have not noticed any appreciable wear or damage from using the dishwasher.
How unsafe is it, really?
The Bitossi and other Italian decorative pieces I have bought have only been carefully hand washed and I would never dishwash them....but what about the dinnerware?
Rub-a-Dub
On the RW residential, I can tell you from experience that eventually the polish the melmac was buffed to from the factory will wear off and the melmac will become flat and dull looking. It was only the two bowls used for the cats that I consistantly dishwashered but over time that is what happened to them.

i've been dishwashing all my Zeisel. have not seen any change. but i have a ton
of it and use it for everyday. i over-collected so i would not treat it precious.
so i have lots of spares, especially the glassware. (a few of the glasses though,
have gathered a bit of cloudiness). but again i have dozens. and use the same
12 or so for everyday use.
i plan on picking up some dishwashing powder from Whole Foods. may not be
as harsh? i've switched all my other cleaners. just keep forgetting about the
dishwasher.
