I'm interested in creating a pair of miniature Wegner Shell chairs. They will be just large enough for a child to sit in comfortably. I have been experimenting with several materials but have not yet found anything that will work well enough.
The sharpest turn to be dealt with is inside a 44 degree angle at the top of the back leg. These normally are 3/4" thick and appear to have 12 layers.
1/16" veneers are existent but too brittle. 1/8" bending poplars are cheapish. Furthermore as the sides of the legs will be exposed (not veneered) bending poplars wouldn't give the nice layered look the real chair has.
Does anyone have recommendations for materials? Ideal thickness would be 1/16". I have molds built and layers will be vacuum pressed.
