We want to buy a Womb chair and have sat in a regular (full size) model. It's a big comfy chair but possibly too large for some people. We're putting it in the living room. Does anyone have any experience with the medium sized model? Is it more comfortable for more people?

Womb Chair Medium = 85% of Original
Hello
If you have the space go with the full size.
I've been toying with the Womb Chair. I think the Medium and Small were only released in Milan this year (can anyone confirm?).
I am about 172cm tall and weigh around 63kg. Not all that big by European standards.
Having sat in the full sized chair, I found that its not really a chair you sit upright in (i.e. with your back against the back-rest). Yes you could do that, but as the blurb in the Knoll brochure says: Florence Knoll wanted something she could "curl up in". And that is precisely what the Womb is good for.
I found it rather comfortable whilst flopping into it diagonally, or sitting in it horizontally, with my legs on one arm rest. I wouldn't want the chair to be any smaller if I was going to do that on a consistent basis!
There are a few Womb Chair owners on this forum, am sure they'll have something to say 😀

Womb chair - a chair for flopping in
Thanks. I agree about it being a chair for flopping! I was just thinking that as a lounge chair, the medium might be better. Thinking of it another way... maybe the full size Womb is more of a solitary person's chair than a conversational one...?

I'm a full sized gal...
but I love the womb chair...it's an awesome chair for reading in...lots of positions to 'curl up in'. Never does it get uncomfortable to be in. but it's more of a nest than a chair. As intended!

Cushions matter
Am told that the cushions matter on that chair. Is that true?
Only tried ones with the normal foam.
Also just learn't you can do it in leather as a "special".
Does Knoll offer a down-filled-cushion option in Europe?

I'm not feeling the new...
I'm not feeling the new leather version i think it looses the cosy / inviting look you get with fabric, maybe in 30 years when the leather has a patina it might be a different story
I'm 6ft 3" and the chair is a great fit and very comfortable, for me the smaller version may not have the cocoon feel of the full size,
i'd be sitting "on it" rather than "in it" if that make sense

I'm a stickler
for staying with the original idea. If the full size did not meet my needs, I would choose another design.
I too, almost bought a womb chair at one point. I live in 600 square feet and the womb was both physically and visually too large in this context. I opted for something else.
I still dream of cuddling with Saarinen himself every night though. You can't take that away from me.

Comfortable, and nice to...
Comfortable, and nice to look at, too.
I was in the Knoll office in SF last week and they had one of the small Wombs. It looked like a children's version of the chair. At my height, it would have been a comical undertaking to navigate in and out of it.

I'm glad to hear it. This chair is too expensive for buyer's remorse!

In BLACK leather??
You're not serious ...
I thought a red or a claret was more in keeping with the chair 😀
If you are serious about getting it in leather though, here is a word of warning. I'd check with the leather experts on this forum first.
The Womb chair has a lot of very organic curves. If you pick too hard a leather (e.g. Knoll's Acqua or Volo) you may risk it forming funny crinkles or bumps at some of the deeper curves.
Its for the same reason they don't usually do any of the Bertoias in leather.
Assuming you pick leather, ask the sales dude for a soft one. The softest in the Knoll range however, is also the most expansive - their "N" grade Riva (aniline dyed natural leather). In the UK that nearly doubles the price of the chair.
But .. it'll look and feel great ^^

Leather!
I know it's not the traditional red Boucle (I think they call it) but I think it would look great, and it would suit the room well. That being said, I have wondered whether leather might be too slippery for this big chair i.e. less grip when lounging. Any comments?
The comment about the leather crinkling is a bit of a concern... I was going to go with a Volo leather. I have a sample and it seemed nicer than the higher grade Andes leather because it has a bit of texture to it. Comments............?

I personally would order it...
I personally would order it in fabric, but it you do get it in leather be very picky. It'll pay off.
I am curious. What about your room leads you to think it will work best? I am not saying it won't ... this is purely out of curiosity.
Is your sofa leather? If it is, I would personally recommend not getting too much of it in one environment.

I like certain chairs in...
I like certain chairs in leather, especially. The Womb is one of the only chairs that I think is compromised by leather. It really seems to only work in a high grade tweed or boucle. The leather looks too slick and smooth. Again, though, as someone else pointed out, give it 8-10 years, and will look amazing.
From my personal experience, go with a thinner leather. A heavier leather will be much more likely to prematurely maladhere to the foam and sort of pop away from it.
Good luck
