My favoite architect hands down is Phillip Johnson and John Burgee In the 1970's, when Houston was just becoming the energy capital of the world, Shell Oil moved its headquarters to the city. When Pennzoil followed suit, it did not want to imitate Shell's boring gray tower. Instead, Pennzoil went with two towers, which is ironic because Shell eventually built a second tower of its own. The distance between the two Pennzoil buildings is just ten feet. And evocative of its roof line, the entire street-level plaza is enclosed in a glass pyramid. This is illustrated in the second photograph from the Pennzoil-Quaker State web page. Some question the wisdom of wasting materials and space on aesthetics in office buildings. Pennzoil Place, however proves that attractive buildings attract tenants. Before it was even completed, two additional stories were added to meet demand; this while the rest of the country suffered through a recession and an energy crisis. I officed on the 32 floor of 21 shell Plaza I spent most of my day supervising the building of Pennzoil Place and to this day I still think what a grat building 33 years after it was finished I can honestly say I saw
every piece of concrete, steel, and glass go into this building for this reason alone my vote goes to Phillip Johnson as the greatest architect.

If you mean outside the family, then it would have to be Wright.

amen to neutra
his obsession with understanding his clients lifestyle and needs were primary. he actually designed the furniture first, then its placement, and finally the house around it. accounts give his houses an outstanding rightness of feeling from this pointed concern with people. i am dying to experience one.
