I keep looking at this abused Danish Modern coffee table that no one wants. Its in a thrift store. They only want $10 for it, but it has some veneer chipped on one end and generally needs refinishing and I've promised myself not to buy any more furniture to refinish unless it is by some one really worthwhile preserving. There's no design or producer mark that I can see, just some cryptic, stenciled numbers and letters. Its a rectangular top that curves in slightly at each end. As I said, the long sides gracefully flip up a quarter or half inch on each of the long sides. And underneath there's a several round dowels joining the frame and legs across the short direction. I vaguely recall a good designer made a coffee table with this flip lip on the long side. Anyone recall the designer?
ohh wow A france & son novice
Well they were a superb danish company which produced some of the most memorable designs though collaboration with leading Danish designers of their time.
Ole Wanscher, Finn Juhl, Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen, Sigvard bernadotte and many more.
france & son where originally France & Daverkosen but became france & son until the late 1960s when poul cadovious took over and it merged into CADO.
A simple search of the net will give you lots of info.
I am told that Mr J France the son of the original MR FRANCE himself today resides in Oxford.
PS $10 for the table is worth it.
It is a non specific design which means that it is a table that came about through the workings of the company and not a famous danish architect.
Good luck with the restoration.
Simon
