While I like how they look, I've found mine to be surprisingly useless. Most often I see these with magazines in them--always Dwell and Atomic Ranch--, but that's such a huge waste of space. I've also seen them in poolside photo shoots, filled with oranges, but how often do you need a giant basket full of oranges?
Does anyone own one of these and actually use it?
The only solution is to take up knitting.
Since only balls of colorful yarn artfully speared by knitting needles would look picturesque in such a "catch-all".
I have plenty of "catch-alls" in my home, only in the form of attractive lidded boxes, mostly rattan. I don't want to SEE any of my tangled detritus (computer cables, battery chargers, instruction manuals, etc).
Sol Bloom either had unusually picturesque stuff to "catch", or he designed an item useful only to photo stylists.
When Mister Panda isn't sitting in mine
it lives next to the hi-fi and holds CDs that are waiting to be put back in the racks. It's not great for that job, but it's better than my previous solution, which just involved stacking CDs on every available flat surface.
I tried using the Catch-All at the front door to hold keys and mail. Too low; HM's Nelson Tray Table works a lot better.
Also tried using it to hold magazines for reading (as opposed to magazines for display only), but it's really inefficient for that function. The curved basket takes a lot of room, but magazines just slide into the center of it, leaving the outer circumference unused and wasted. LTRs or other side tables work WAY better.
I have to agree with Brent, WHC, and Jesgord: The thing is pretty, but it's not really ideal for much except decoratively displaying a few magazines.
