I was at DWR in Dallas this morning and I was very diapointed in the Eames Bucket chair made by Vitra.
Charles and Ray would be very sad about this chair. It comes in 4 colors and I saw white (although not that bad just disapointing)
It looks like something that Karim Rashid would wip up in is studio . I don't like that they are just one dimenshional flat plastic, at least Modernica tried to rip off the original with fiberglass these folks said the hell with you all. we hold the rights and we will change it any way we want to, They used the same type of stands that you can buy on ebay for 85.00 (the effiel tower base thank g-d for that) .
Folks out in Design addict land just keep buying the old vintage buckets at thrift stores, vintage shops, and Ebay if you really want a good looking bucket ... cause it is a sad day what Vitra has done to a true Icon. stunk it up.....

About the eiffel bases of...
About the eiffel bases of the Vitra chairs.
Have you noticed how they have completely different proportions compared to the originals? They look like an elephant sat on them...
But on the other hand even the older, 60's-70's Vitra production are different to the HM chairs. They appear to be smaller and have more narrow armrests for example. And these were made when Charles and Ray were still around...

Vitra Buckets
..... Well that speaks for it... Vitra made in Europe ... Herman Miller chairs in U.S.A. Americans have fatter Asses
and Herman Miller wanted to make them more confortable for us.

Lucifersum and LRF
I agree with both of you about the environmental issues and that this is a legitimate reason to change an old design. I also agree that the Eames's would probably have done something similar if they had been alive to experience the environmental awareness of today.
Still, my problem with the Vitra designs is that they are sooo far from the original. A Herman Miller rocker might have looked fragile at first glance, but when you sit in it, it feels stable and well-made. My experience with the Vitra version is that it simply feels 'cheap'.
My biggest concern is that they seem to have altered the dimensions of the bases. This is something I don't really get. There can't really be any reason for changing the shape of the design other than ignorance and laziness...

smaller stands
now that I think about it the bases were a little smaller. I have had so many of those chairs i just take it for granted that they were all the same ., but the new ones in heavy white plastic have there own look ... sorta like life in reverse ... think about what we did in the 50's and early 60's with black and white T.V. before color T.V. came into play . This reminds me of the same with these chairs.
