I have 4 early tulip armchairs in gray that I am getting ready to sell. The clear coat was wrinkled and or gone in places when I got them. While cleaning them the more compromised areas of clear coat came right off without damaging the paint, but other places it is not cleaning off. Is there a way to get the rest of the clear coat off without damaging the paint? The paint is a very uncommon original color and I would like to preserve it. thanks

I have a gray one
That was painted over in a similar color. I tried to use that citrus based paint remover (forget the name) that is supposedly "safe" for plastic. It looked like it ate through the clear coat. The underlying dyed plastic looked okay, but it is a mess to clean up so the final result is not that great without further work or meticulous clean-up effort. The curves on the Tulip may also prove to be difficult areas to work with.

acetone
Acetone will take clear coat off, but you have to use it sparingly. Are you sure it's clear coat? I thought those chairs were gel-coated? In that case, the acetone will take the dead gel-coat off. If you go crazy with it, it'll take it down to the fiberglass, which isn't good.
