personally
I don't watch much television at all - and I am not saying that because it's the thing to say. But, I have one in the living room. I find it pleasing for my guests. There is an automatic stuffiness to a living room without one in a way. Like no one knows what to do with themselves! Plus, I do like watching DVDs alot. I love movies, and I love watching my favorite shows after they come out on DVD. That's the problem with television ... I can't dedicate a certain time of the wee every week to watch a show. And I don't have a fancy setup where I can record it either.
Personally, yeah, they are ugly. But, to me, they are no uglier than a microwave or a computer. They are just fact of contemporary life. I hope to get a fancy one.
I like the Westinghouse TVs...
I like the Westinghouse TVs for two reasons:
1. Paul Rand designed the logo, which is killer
2. They come in black. I really don't like the silver ones. Black seems to "disappear" better.
The problem with flat screen TV is the sound. They NEED sound reinforcement - which, in turn, means even more electronic equipment and cables. Best scenerio is a good credenza that can hold all of that stuff, a good looking TV, and good looking speakers.
Now, speakers are really ugly these days. Id like to get either a pair of Advents, ARs, or those cool Bose speakers with the Saarinen tulip style bases.
Given my forum "handle"
I guess I have to step up in defense of the idiot box. Agreed there is a lot of mindless drivel on the box that most assuredly caters to the lowest common denominator. But at it's best it can transmit images from across the street or across the world.
I can remember almost as if it were yesterday as images were broadcast as the Berlin wall came down or again in Germany as the 72 Munich Olympics hostage crisis unfolded. Or that early morning almost 40 years ago when a man stepped out of what amounted to not much more than a beer can and walked on the moon.
As an industry (the production of programs) they provide a reasonably good living to a great many people (many dear friends included) and as a bonus they produce a product that doesn't wind up in a landfill other than perhaps an intellectual landfill.
The physical design of the units gets better and better and because of their slim profile they can be made to literally disappear in almost any environment. Now the TVs of yesteryear in those big walnut cabinets that placed the screen approximately 6 inches off the floor, now that's a whole other issue.
.
I read a lot, not all high brow at all but I find it a bit more relaxing than television and theres more choice.
I disagree with Whitespike in the nicest possible way, living rooms with a television in them, especially if they're on whilst people are trying to talk infuriate me.
But I do like the lines of these older ones, nicer to look at when they're off or maybe playing The Man From uncle, or Bergerac.
