Hi Daniel,
These were...
Hi Daniel,
These were finished with a strong glossy varnish, so it's probably this finish wich is yellowed and lost it's transparency.
Erik.H posted some pages (in dutch), an article concerning the firm's production in the seventies, when Gervan started up 'G-collection', a more exclusive furniture line, while still producing other genres of furniture too (as your sofa for instance).
These scandinavian inspired pieces were made from around 1960 up to the end of the sixties. The article states 'designers' were hired or contacted to 'copy' scandinavian examples and create this own line of danish furniture.
The family behind Gervan produced linnen-fibres, an industry wich boomed in the west of flanders, but saw it's decline in the late fifties. Looking for alternatives they started producing furniture, focussing on seating.
Your sofa would entirely have been made by one laborer, they had no machine or furniture street in that day. Hence the quality of these early pieces (although being 'copies' or heavily inspired) is quite high and comparable with danish examples.
Also the design seems very well-balanced, wich often isn't the case with these danish-inspired/european made furniture.
It will probably remain a mystery who were these 'designers'...
Hi bj,
Thank you for so much information. I was interested to hear that each piece was made by one person, by hand.
You also mentioned the balance of the design. Comparing this to Hans Olsen's sofa, I actually find the Gervan one more attractive; those arm rests are stunning and the gut string back is lovely too.
