So whilst waiting for the elevator this afternoon, I spied 3 pieces of stainless steel relaxing beside the dumpster. I swear that Aunt Mark has never "dumpster shopped" before...but I grabbed the pieces. I was impressed on the quality of the fit and finish, and how easily the 3 pieces went together. The top was probably once thick glass. There is a "made in italy" label inside. So what should I do?

~take it apart and put it back by the dumpster?
~clean it up and have a piece of white marble (or teak?) cut for the top?
~continue with the shock therapy sessions?
~go on a diet?

I like the basic lines of the frame, and it is rather heavy for its 16" square size...and 22" high. I've never asked for an I.D...but I'll send you a small canned ham and a jello salad if you can identify.

Advice always adored, anticipated and appreciated,

Aunt Mark

No idea on the ID, but I think you should keep it and stick a slab of something on there. I always like teak. Maybe a solid slab of matte black slate?

I really like the matte black slate idea. I just don't want glass.
Many thanks,
Aunt Mark, dumpster diver

Al-a-baster tie in
Or perchance some alabaster to tie in with the lovely 'fugly' round mirror?

I do
like the idea of wood to soften it up. Pretty severe right now.

Another sweet option, thanks. I'm starting to like the thing. It should be an easy fix, I now need to make a decision. Which are cheaper, wood or stone? I'd love teak.
Hugs and hominy grits to all,
Aunt Mark

how about.....
I am imagining the tops as inserts, which could be interchanged, or reversed as required or desired. The only issue I see is that you may need a way to protect the bottom of the top from scuffing on those steel legs. Maybe a thin strip of rubber or felt glued to the top ends of the legs would do the trick.

Here's one teak option. Guessing by the tile size the base is 15 inches square so this ought to be more than large enough.
Just need to find a friendly carpenter with a tools to cut it down to size.
(Second photo is a table I dearly want to find with the slab teak and stainless steel.)

falling up hill
Mark,
That is a good find. My thought would be black marble insert with a designated use of plant stand.

Greetings all!
My first "table talk" update. I visited 2 architectural millwork business this morning (loved the lumber smell..), and because of the 15.75 inch square required, both places were unable to provide me with a single slab of any sort of wood. The first shop had an old mahogany table leaf (sans the mahogany association #), but it was still 2 pieces glued together...and would cost around $250.USD to cut my desired size. Both places were very friendly, I wore pink and white seersucker pants with an orange shirt and white Gucci bucks. Next week I shall next visit a stone/marble place and look at matte black/or white marble.
To be continued....
Aunt Mark
ps. snappy enclosed

If you want a single piece...
If you want a single piece slab of teak, then you might be interested in buying this from eBay:

stone
You should be able to get a piece of stone pretty reasonable. Ask to see their bone yard. All my local granite shops all have these large areas/yards full of their waste pieces. I have even found credenza size pieces there. They end up with lots of extra pieces that don't work for kitchens. They are usually glad to get rid of it. Even with cuting and polishing, the price has always been pretty good.

Oh that looks like a lovely piece of wood, thanks so much leif. Would It be best to ask the seller to cut the piece to the correct size? or do I go back to where I visited this morning and have the horny old dude chop it in his garage?...I will try and visit a stone yard on Friday and ask to see the "bone yard", thanks atomic! I may end up taking SDR's suggestion of putting a tufted mauve (or faux leopard) velvet seat on top, with an 8 inch pleated skirt all around. Tassles, natch.
All the best,
Aunt Mark
