OK, so I am in Copenhagen this weekend, staying at the Radisson Blu (designed by A.J.), basking in the plethora of eggs and swans.
BUT! Where do I go to eat some real Danish food in this town? Every other restaurant appears to be an English pub! What's up with that?
A girl cannot live on Illums Bolighus alone. Where should I go to eat some authentic chow?
(Question posed while sitting in a FH 1999 Series 7 chair.)
Pictures tomorrow, I promise!
Luckeeee!
First, you want smørrebrød, the open-face sandwiches eaten with a knife and fork. In the year that I lived there, I only ate these at peoples' houses and work-related luncheons, so I don't know about resaurants. No wait, that's not true, we ate a really nice little joint on Nyhavn--delicious leverpostej (liver paste) with crackly fried onions on top. YUM. I want to go back.
Anyway, the link below is to an article with some suggestions. Looks pretty good to me. It's kind of hard to go wrong with food in Denmark.
You should also go into any bakery and get some pastries and/or bread for snacks. Really, it's pretty much all great! I loved the three seed bread.
We always stayed at the low-end (but nice) Cab-Inn which serves a wonderful Danish breakfast of cheese, salami, ham, rolls, pastries, yogurt, muesli, juice, coffee, tea, hot cereal, hb & sb eggs, and more. I would find a place like that to start the day off. God, I miss that spread.

Enjoy
It is crazy crowded
in Copenhagen today because the sun is shining and it's 19/75 degrees. Found some smorrebrod y'all, and it was delicious! Left to right is roast beef, smoked eel and fried plaice. Unfortunately, it's Easter hols and the shops are closed but we are going to an outdoor antique market tomorrow in Frederiksburg so I'm looking for Krenit, Catherineholm, etc.
Cool! Looks like a great...
Cool! Looks like a great time. One note though - while the monkeys and hippos and all that are Kay Bojeson, the oak birds were designed by Kristian Vedel. I only know this because I bought some as a gift last Christmas 🙂 Anyway, sorry to nitpick. Hope you find some great stuff!
Roast beef was
topped with parmesean cheese, crispy fried onion bits and some kind of sweet/tangy chutney with (I think?) gooseberries, but I may be wrong on the berry species! The slice of brown bread lurking underneath the pile was spread with a horseradish/mayo type of spread. It was delish.
We had a good morning at the Frederiksburg antique market. I scored a red Stelton Thermos by Erik Magnusson for the equivalent of 18 USD. Also, two pieces of Danish ceramics from a company called Soholm that I have yet to google.

Did you go to the outdoor flea market near the Fredriksberg Town Hall? I've been to that one a few times and always found good stuff---including a bunch of Søholm pottery! It must be fairly common. I also got one of those beautiful little Copco gravy boats or whatever they're called--the little spouted pot on the cast iron stand that holds a tealight---for maybe $3. And one of those really nice Danish telephones that I forget the designer of...flat, sleek, big buttons, nice colors. Only a few dollars too, but it was always kind of delicate and then one day I got mad at someone on the phone and kind of slammed the receiver down and that was the end of that.
But anyway! Great flea market. I can't wait to go back someday.
