LRF,
I'm not sure if youre kidding or not.
Steve Jobs was nothing more than a glorified car salesman.
He did not design anything. He didn't program a single line of code and he was not an industrial designer.
As for doing design on a PC? There is absolutely no difference, infact 2 of the largest design companies switched to PC over 8 years ago.
Steve Jobs was a...
Steve Jobs was a genius!
Even though he wasn't a designer, nobody better than him understood the importance of design in the conception of a product (real design, not styling). He worked with the best designers and gave them a leading role at Apple.
By the way, if he had'nt created the Mac with Steve Wozniak, Design Addict would not exist!
Before using my first Mac more than 15 years ago, I found the use of PC really boring and painfull. I finally enjoyed working in front of a screen when I got my first Mac. Suddenly, everything became easy and enjoyable. The slogan "It just works" is not only a marketing mantra, it's a reality that I check every day since a long long time! Without this user friendly computer, I could never have built the first version of Design Addict in 1997.
death is regretable
While death is regretable, some would say that Henry Ford was the greatest designer and inventor. Ever tried to mass produce computers without a production line?
I think that the guy who designed the dollar bill is great. Ever tried to buy food without one?
I may be mistaken but Thomas Edison sure made it easy to see what I am doing when the sun sets.
The world has been and is filled with exceptional people and nobody will say that Steve Jobs does not fit into that catagory.
I personally can't see what all the fuss is about.
I've been a Mac user for years, in my industry there is no choice, the Mac has carved it's niche and dominates the creative industry. Sure, Jobs seems to have done a fairly good PR job, but he's no messiah.
I found this quite interesting:

Very
amusing thread. For those buying phones, computers, notepads or MP3 players, Jobs headed a good company coming up with cool ideas. I don't know if Jobs actually designed the look of these devices.
I own/and or use only two Apple products; iTunes to arrange the music I have on my computer and a classic iPod, which I bought second hand.
At this point, a smart phone, notepad, or a MAC computer is not something I'm interested in.
If Apple lives or dies by the CEO of the company, then I'm afraid they're going to have a bumpy road ahead.
Steve Jobs grew up in an I-Kler!
Natch.

Yeah, but
I'm not sure how much influence it really had on his design philosophy, as his parents moved out of that house when he was 11. Google Maps:

simply amazing.
I've never viewed maps.google until now..thanks fastfwd. I was even able to spot the home that I was raised in (where my folks still reside part time). And by 11 years old, I was already smoking weed, teasing my hair, and re-arranging the household furniture every chance that i got. Some things never change.
Best,
Mark
