I have two vintage fiberglass eames shells that were painted with what looks like a single coat of house paint( with a brush). I would like to get them back to their original condition, but I am worried that paint thinner will remove the resin on the fiberglass. Any thoughts?

it won't hurt
we strip them all the time just use
paint thinner and and elbo crease
Do not use the furniture stripper as it will hurt the fiberglass and you too.... be careful!!! wear gloves

try it out
one thing you might see is the color that was painted on the shells as it could be tatooed in by now but if you do it right it will have a cool look in the fibers ( this has happened so many times to us ,)

.
Paint thinnner = mineral spirits. A slightly 'oily' volatile, slower to evaporate than lacquer thinner or acetone (for instance). Not harmful to most painted or plastic surfaces.

citrus strip works fine also
I found two early Eames, Zenith chairs, and since they were rough underneath the paint, they needed a more aggresive remover. I used citrus strip, and it doesn't really hurt the gel resin, if you get it off within a day. I even save the label by timing the lifting just right. You may have to rub the paint off a little (while the stripper is working) if the parent surface was rough before being painted. That was the reason mine were painted in the first place.
I am the guy that isn't afraid to try anything, and I haven't ruined anything yet. Some people are probably going to tell you not to do this, but I have proof it works.
Citrus also removes latex paint from plaster really well also!
