I picked up this article at Archinect.com., an architecture site. I thought it might have relevance for the designers in our community, too.

Thanks, SDR...
This is a terrific story highlighting both how much we don't know we don't know, and how much ethical responsibility society has to see that scientific inquiry is constrained from totalitarian misuse. Alas, you can almost be certain that this sort of research WILL be used in robotic weapon systems as a means of identifying and targeting for killing large numbers of persons based on facial and body morphology. There was a reason the US military was already in this business and it wasn't just more comfortable skivvies. And, of course, each military will counter by making soldiers wear masks. And each military will counter the counter by developing technology that reads through the mask. And so on. Human beings really have to get beyond seeing the technology of applied violence as a feasible means of problem resolution. It causes us to pervert technologies like this one that could do so much good.

On
On a similar theme DC,
I was reading at the weekend that Leonardo da Vinci, as a pacifist, deliberately included flaws in some of his many inventions to prevent them possibly being put to military use
