Hi everyone,
I'm looking to purchase a shelving unit for a home office and was hoping to get some advice/suggestions for available mid-end designs given that I'm not thoroughly attuned to the furniture design world on a regular basis and my research thus far has me getting pulled on too many different directions.
I really love the 4x2 Eames Shelving Unit (but then again who doesn't??) not only because it's a great design, but it hits almost all the points I'm looking for: it has a mix of open and enclosed shelves, uses sliding doors, has some drawers, nice blend of materials (not pure wood or metal), some color accents, etc. Plus it happens to be the near perfect width and depth for my particular needs, although I'll admit I wouldn't mind it if it had an extra row of shelves on top.
Unfortunately the price for the 4x2 is prohibitive to me at this point. Further, I'm not inclined to buy a replica/knockoff. It'll make the feeling of getting the real thing at some point in the future so much sweeter.
Options I've looked at that seem to reflect some (but never all at once) of these "concepts" are Blu Dot's Shilf shelving and modulicious pieces, MFsystem shelves, Fitzhugh Karol's FK series Sapele shelves, and even some crate and barrel chrome shelves meant for kitchen storage.
Costwise my goal would be to stay under $1,000.
Apologies if this post is vague or out of place here, and thank you in advance for any thoughts.
Regards.

It's a shame you're in the US...
..as your buck doesn't go as far with import taxes and other expenses, but some of the shelving systems by Kartell might suit. I'm thinking of the modular bookshelf by Giulio Polvara, or the Optic storage, One storage....or possibly the Boogie-Woogie storage sytem by Magis. Again it's Italian, so you'll be paying a little more than we do over here in Europe, but it still might be within your $1000 budget, and like the others you can add to it as time goes by.

The only item not mentioned that I noticed was the George Nelson OMNI shelving unit.
The Blu Dot was very nice, sort of like the Finn Juhl Credenza which would be the high-end.
The ESU holds its price used, doesn't it?
I'd be very interested to hear how you come out.

Thanks!
Thank you all for the suggestions! I should have clarified that I am in the US, so some of those options are more limited.
I had looked at the George Nelson Omni system (what a beauty, by the way...), but don't think the dimensions would work for me. They seem to be around 30-32 inches wide for each vertical "module", and I only have about 45 inches so just one module doesn't fully utilize the space and there's not enough room for two.
I think I'm honing in a solution though, and it's going to be more custom tailored than I had originally expected. As I was researching options I became more and more attracted to partial/full wall mounted modular shelving systems like Dieter Ram's 606 through Vitsoe, also Atlas Industries' shelving units and others. Eventually I came across the Rakks system which looks incredibly versatile and is very affordable. My thinking was to use the L bracket system in conjunction with custom made maple shelving, drawer unit sliding door cabinet.
The problem is that in talking to carpenters about the wood work I became so enthusiastic about the stuff that I decided to also tackle a much needed electronics/media rack in our living room, which is great but means I have to split my budget....ok, and maybe slightly increase it..
So now I'm leaning towards the Rakks L bracket system with custom shelves, but using an Ikea Stolmen drawer unit and cabinet instead. The Stolmen stuff is actually a wardrobe system, but it happens to be just the right size and the white color works overall. If my estimating is not far off, I should have about $400-$500 left to play with in the living room!
Again, thanks all for the suggestions. I'll try to post a picture when all is done.

Rakks
Yeah, the Rakks systems are good. I don't have any anymore, but I still recommend them to everyone.
I have an Ikea Stolmen setup in a closet; those drawer units are solid and dependable.
