Apologies for an extreme nerd moment: The green color of the new shells I got this weekend differs a lot from the traditional "warmer tint "Kelly green of the padded one we have and of the ones I have owned before. The padded one is Summit plastics 1969 with the 3rd gen mounts and holes cut for padding, with less prominent fiberglass strands, while the set of four has massive fibers like 2nd gen Zenith but is also 1969 Summit with the second gen mounts. It seems odd they are so far apart surface and color wise being made the same time and by the same plastic company and how within a year the transition from mount styles.I know here was variation but I first thought it was maybe fading but they are all uniform top to bottom on all four chairs... and the tone in person is on the more "turquoise" side with the fiber content reflecting a more cool tone.
I really like the color of these compared to the true green I see normally.
Summit
Summit production generally have much shorter fibers than the previous manufacturers. Also, in the later years (70s - 80s) the fibers were much less visible.
Interesting to see the color variation, if they are both supposed to be the same color. It would be nice if we could access later HM charts to see all of the colors that were produced in the later years.
I guess the interesting...
I guess the interesting thing to me is this is both from Summit from the same era. ( well the uncovered one is technically 68' and the covered one is 69'.
The 69 has the 3rd generation mounts and the 68' has the second generation. The fibers seem much more prominent in the 68' one too, so it is interesting how different they look. Kelly green almost looks like a turquoise.
OK, well, I guess the topic...
OK, well, I guess the topic was the color more than the mounts, so I did not wish to get too off topic when it did not seem that needed for the conversation.
Hex head, locking, flat short flange coarse thread, fine head locking screw etc, ...I mean are you breaking it down into further subgroups in each basic generation of the thread mechanisms?
Lunchbox, is s there an issue I am not aware of? I am feeling a bit of venom, and not sure why.. 🙂 You are an expert well past my knowledge base, I am well aware of that already.
Don't take it personally...
I'm just naturally prickly I'm told.
The point is Summit Plastics wasn't just one factory. It was a large company and there were variances not only from era to era but from site to site. And just because you may have one component from this era and another from that doesn't necessarily mean you've arrived at anything. Factory yield was also a factor. Basically you're asking questions for which there are no definitive answers, which is what woody was saying with his previous comment.
"matching" chair colors
The shell colors are almost never an exact match. Even "original pairs" are very often not dead-on.
My guess is that the only absolute color matches would be from specific batches.
If you keep accumulating your green ones, you will end up with a spectrum of greens, rather than a bunch of any one color. Once in a while you will get "lucky" and hit a match, but more often than not you will be pleasantly surprised at how different they are.
Color is relative, and subtle differences are hard to detect until you put them next to each other. Then it becomes obvious. Depends on how hard you look.
There are exceptions. For instance, the later red-orange chairs SEEM very consistent from chair to chair. Black chairs with very little wear are also very consistent in color. (which surprises me, as black is a color that very often shows up relatively "warm" or "cool" when placed side by side )
For me early on, to not have chairs match up was frustrating, but now I love that they don't, and enjoy the variety much more than if they were all the same. I love how one color changes the other.
