Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me out. I have been in touch with a dealer about a tulip coffee table. it's labeled knoll on what looks like both the top and the base, and the label itself is a very old knoll sticker (it uses a knoll logo that changed long ago).
I've showed it to some people, both of whom have said that it's unlikely that a fake would try to use the older logo and therefore it's likely real. but two things are odd:
1) its height is listed as 43cm, not 38cm. i understand that over the years some of these tables were made to non-standard heights, but it's still just that: non-standard. I should add that the dimensions of the top (106cm by70cm) are standard.
2) the base is round, but the table is oval. i think that the new ones all have oval bases, even the coffee tables, but i don't know if that has always been the case. interestingly the salesperson at knoll that i spoke to on the phone also didn't know if that has always been the case.
Any help would be appreciated.

ok, nobody had anything to add. the answer is that it's authentic, per conversations with people at knoll UK and wohnbedarf.
also, despite the fact that people at conran shop, twenty twenty one, and also scott howard all said that saarinen coffee tables have oval bases, in reality ones produced in the UK for knoll have round bases. as confirmed by knoll, by wohnbedarf, and also by aram, which actually had one on display. so when you call people, even at authorized retailers, many times you find that they don't necessarily know what they're talking about. although it is worth noting that knoll US says that their oval coffee tables DO have oval bases. so knoll international is, interestingly, different. go figure.
anyway, that is just fyi for anyone trying to figure this stuff out in the future.
one thing that i am curious about is the following: it's an old table, clearly from before knoll started to apply its polyurethane coating to seal its marble surfaces. which means it'll stain more easily. does anyone here have any idea how best to seal a marble surface? i'd like to be able to put a glass on it sometime without worrying about permanently staining it, if at all possible.
