I?ve finally got around to doing something with my Eames DAX, and as have a few questions that I?d like some advice on please: These are (as far as I can make out from my research, and what I was told when I bought them) late 1950s, black and originally had Naugahyde upholstery. I know this is true because I just scrubbed off the last of the foam, and there are factory holes ? a single one about 3/4th of an inch in each. There are lots of fibres showing, which I like, but I?m thinking that I can?t really get away with not sealing them (as was my intention) as the fibres are frankly, a bit irritating, even after working down to a really smooth finish with a super fine grade wet & dry. I?ll think more on this, as have read various suggestions about carnauba wax (I can?t get Penetrol here), but also I wonder, given the amount arm-work I?ve already done, whether I might just look into getting a clear gel-coat done. Lazy, or sensible? The chairs themselves all have their original shock mounts and the chrome legs are all in excellent order. No labels to the chairs, but the shocks have the Herman Miller logo on them and are clearly original. There is, though, a V on the underside near the front ? or is it pointer?
Anyway, actually, the issue was about the factory holes ? I don?t really want to get into filling them, as I don?t think I could replicate the long fibres on the shell, and think it?d probably look worse for my efforts. And I have searched for information about reupholstering them, and can?t come up with anyone either having done it, or offering a service for re-upholstery or replacement. Would a (professionally created) seat pad be ugly and superfluous to hide the holes, or should I just go with it? Are they a big deal? I know it?s mine to judge, after all, but I?d be grateful for any input from those on here that have restored and worked on scores of these chairs. Thanks in advance. I can add photos if that helps? Thank you, Claire
