Found this 80+ year old rocker (looks like oak) in a deserted house that belongs to my family. The original seat was laminated wood
that was fitted in a curved slot on both sides of the seat support rails shown in the photos. Any suggestions on how to replace the
seat without dismantlling the chair? Or how to replace it if the chair does have to be separated?
If you're really determined to do it without needing to partially disassemble the chair (though removing the seat rails doesn't appear overly difficult), the only way is to chop out and extend the grooves all the way to the ends of the rails so you can slide in a new piece of bending plywood (goggle it) or narrow slats of solid wood. Either way, first make a cardboard template that fits to aid with sizing.
