Eames Chair repair
I have 2 old Eames wooden lounge chairs (LCW with cherry finish) in need of repair. The backs actually need to be replaced because the previous owner tried to repair them with screws right through the backs when the mounting hardware failed about 25 years ago. I am hoping to find replacement parts for the backs and rubber mounting pieces. I live in Ohio, and the high cost of shipping the chairs to be repaired is an issue.
You can
You can have the backs repaired with a plug and some sanding, then have the shockmounts reglued.
The problem with replacing the backs of the chairs is that you will never ever be able to get an exact match to the grain of the rest of the chair. I had a chair that had a replaced back and it looked awful.
You can also just ship the back of the chair - it disassembles fairly easily. Personally, I have used Alfie at Hume Modern to great satisfaction. (not an advertisement, just a testimonial)

what is the name of that special bonding solution to bond the shock mounds on the DWC and LWC my buddie who owns a store had a customer tear one off cause he had trouble getting up and out of the chair.
I know it is bought at ace hardware. and I think it is P ?? thanks in advance

EAMES LOVERS & HATERS
EAMES LOVERS & HATERS
Unlike some of our honorable competitors who constantly slam Herman Miller stating that the company is building an inferior product we at XXX( edited by DA - no advertising please) on the other hand are always appreciative that we have the opportunity to work not only on the most famous and recognizable mid century furniture in the world but also the fact that it is manufactured and assembled in the heart of this great country.
If you hate Eames furniture design why on earth do you fix it, Is it the money?
You will see from a quick tour of our web site that we embrace and love mid century design.
All our restoration projects are started and finished using the utmost care and attention to detail.
We would never install inferior parts or components to 'fix' a clients chair.
All our replacement repair parts are either original or exact replicas of originals using modern day materials.
We are not claiming to be scientists here but could someone please let us know how many years it would take new neoprene to oxidize in an average modern day household?
If you had a block of wood and a block of neoprene rubber and you flexed it on a constant basis which one would retain its bounce the longest?
"I quite like a sense of excitement in anything, Peter."
Ironically, my wife bore the brunt of the "excitement" yesterday as our L&O which is less than four years old collapsed while she was seated in it. Veneer at the shockmounts splintered. She was fine. Said the fall was nothing with the support of the cushions. But I can't help being a bit jaded. Chair isn't even four years old as I said. And to make things worse, Herman Miller carries a three year warranty. Bollocks.
Ohhhh Peter ...............
Over the last 59 years of repairing as you call it 'The Flawed Eames Lounge Chair' how many wood block installations has your company done.
In the last 5 years or so we have responded to all your crazy postings about how fantastic and fail safe your building block invention is but no-one has ever said that their Olek block and nuts are better than sliced bread.
Has anyone actually had this done to their chair?
Do they actually know that they have had this done to their chair?
Please someone somewhere tell us that their Olek block & nuts are the most amazing things that money can buy.
On the other hand if you want to have your Eames Lounge repaired the right way the first time for a fair price you can visit our web site www.humemodern.com and if you mention Olek on the estimate form we will give you a 20% discount on all your shock mount replacements.
Remember its not a design flaw its a maintenance issue.
Nothing lasts forever, not even a block of wood with nuts in it.
jojo,
I had the same problem and a friend recommended colourlock. They offer special products for cleaning, re-tinting and treatment of cracks as well as protection. I'm very happy with the results...

Mink oil
I like mink oil. I use it to restore old, dry leather and I use it on nice new leather. It keeps it soft and supple and also helps to make it water resistant.
It can darken light colors, but I've never found that objectionable. To me it just imparts a deeper, rich patina.
