What a great essay!  I love David Sedaris.  If you ever get a chance to hear him in person, GO.  And bring a book for him to sign if there's a signing.  He tells jokes to people in line and draws little pictures in your book, too.  I got holly leaves in mine but my daughter got an elephant with a knife sticking in it.  He's a national treasure.  
And yes, what he said about overhead lighting.  Ugh.
