I have a question about Vitra chairs. I have always loved the Eames DAW and DSW but have never been able to find vintage or new in the U.S. I am currently out of the U.S. (Asia) and stumbled into a Kartell store that sells all Vitra furniture and have come across these two chairs. I have no way of telling if the price I was given is fair or not. The DAW price I got was $500 USD and the DSW was $361 USD. I will also have to pay about $35 (each chair) to Kartell if I want it shipped to the U.S. Can some one give me an idea what a reasonable price is for the chairs? I can possibly haggle another 10% off at most. Thanks so much for your help.

I'm a bit confused
1. I was not aware that Vitra offered the dowel base.
2. If you're having them shipped to the US, why not just buy in the US? You could buy vintage fiberglass shells and put them on reproduction dowel bases for significantly cheaper.

funny! As a european i have the impression US ebay and craigslist are full of eames fiberglass chairs. I bought armshells in the states and had them shipped to europe because of exchange rates... shipping eames items into the united states doesn't seem like a good deal to me.
A trustable online shop here sells them for 380 / 300 Euros, that's about the same as your prices. 35$ for shipping sounds very cheap, but You'll also have to pay customs!
Personally I don't think Vitra dowel bases keep up in comparison to vintage hm or good repro ones.
woodywood: You'll have to change your location to a european country on the vitra site. They will be visible then.

Clas, no doubt ebay and craig...
Clas, no doubt ebay and craigslist is littered with vintage fiberglass chairs. I have a few vintage fiberglass shells myself and have been toying with the idea of changing the bases to repo wooden dowels, but I was just too unsure of the repo quality and size to buy it. I knew too that Vitra didn't export them directly into the U.S. because of their agreements with HM. I guess I just got over excited seeing models that were not repros, something that I had never seen in my lifetime in the U.S. The shipping fee is cheap because it is via a ship which takes 3 months (HAHA!, It cracked me up when the guy said 3 months). So, I suppose I will just stick with buying a Nelson clock for $235 and take it in my suitcase when I go home.

In my opinion
The reproduction bases are generally fine, except I have not been able to compare the dowel bases side by side (I do have a reproduction one).
One thing to note is that the Vitra bases on the arm shells have wider stance than those for the side shells. I have not seen any reproduction bases with the wider stance.
Personally, I think the wider stance looks a bit funny.

If you see it in front of...
If you see it in front of you and next to a regular base it's just ridiculous.
like someone messed with the scale-tool in CAD
