I have an old dresser that on the bottom reads Precedent by Drexel 211-4 Mr and Mrs unit. Is this worth anything? Thank you http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture_item_detail.php?id=385740
The info that
I have gathered on the Precedent line by Drexel is that it was made for only one year, 1947, and designed by Edward Wormley.
So, indeed, you may have a nice item. Do you have a picture of your piece that you can post or is it that one on 1stdibs that you have referenced?
Ah, me.
It always comes down to that question, doesn't it?
It has been said on this forum a million times before, but, because I am feeling nice, I will post this again.
1. Are you a dealer? If you are, shame on you. I just gave you the make, year and designer. Do your own homework.
2. Are you inquiring about the value so that you know what to tell your insurance man? Arbitrarily, I would say 2 grand.
3. Do you just want to know what it is worth so that you can tell your friends at your next cocktail party that you bought a dresser for 25 dollars and you heard it was worth XYZ? Again, pick an arbitrary number like 2 grand that will impress them.
4. THE VALUE OF THE DRESSER IS WHAT THE MARKET IS WILLING TO PAY. In other words, what did YOU pay for it? Zero? Did you inherit it? Did you find it on the side of the road? Then the immediate value of the dresser is 0 until you find somebody else willing to pay 10. Then the value becomes 10. Do you see? If you find someone willing to pay 100, the value of the dresser is 100. If you consign it to an auction house and it goes for 563, the value is now 563. Just because you see something FOR SALE on the internet for 50,000 does not mean it is worth 50,000 until you see one SOLD for 50,000.
