In a recent interview with German Die Zeit Magazine, Mr. Starck proclaims the "death of design". No longer satisfied with his life's work and feeling that everything he ever designed was "unnecessary".
UPDATE: Some of the quotes used in the German Weekly.
"I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact",
"Everything I designed was unnecessary".
"I will definitely give up in two years" time. I want to do something else, but I don't know what yet. I want to find a new way of expressing myself "design is a dreadful form of expression".
"In future there will be no more designers. The designers of the future will be the personal coach, the gym trainer, the diet consultant,"
Starck said the only objects that he still felt attached to were "a pillow perhaps and a good mattress." But the thing one needs most, he added, was the "ability to love".

He was not ashamed of all...
He was not ashamed of all the money he made from Ian Schranger and all the hotels he designed for his group.
Hate to say don't believe all of his his bull shit just cause he is Philippe Starck.
Next week, Next month , next year, he will have another article
in some French magazine, how design saved his life from jumping off the Eiffel tower.
.
Mmmmm most creative people at some time abandon or reject their past work, his more ascetic sentiments I find attractive but I think Starck is just so drenched in his public life that he thinks his failings are part of a wider phenomena, pop psycholgy might call it projection?
He has to be credited with being the meat on the hook, he attracted a lot of people to design, the thing is the taste of his buyers usually and quickly surpasses his own.
