I'd love to find a super cool pendant light to hang over my dining room table. I'm thinking (not too seriously) about the Alvar Aalto "Beehive" but the following reasons stop me: 1) new: $1,200 CDN 2) earlier: $4,000 3) seems for the money, they're pretty common and 4) I'd love to find/hunt for something from the 50s/60s and 5) it's damn expensive.
I'd love any feedback, ideas, recos. Looking at my current pendant light is painful 🙂

Hi
what's the painting behind the light?
I'm really curious.
I know close to nothing about painting, but i really like the style and color palette of this one.
cheers

That is a Mark Kostabi image. I can't tell you if it's a painting or a print, though.
Kostabi cranked em out in the 80s during the big world wave of "neo-expressionism"
"Kostabi World" and all that... he had fun with the idea of over-production in the same way that Warhol did.
fastfwd can tell us the rest! (sorry phone girl, off topic for a moment)

option 4, ...or maybe.....
Go with 4. Keep an eye on auctions, estate sales, and thrift stores. The joy is in the hunt, and who knows what else you might find.
or...
Find a friend in the design field who can get you a decent discount on a new fixture. I am an architect and got my PH5 that way. I think it was 40% off of list, but that was a while back so I can't be sure.
Good luck and have fun.

I agree with pirx pilot
Besides, "Option 4" is way more fun too.
The great thing about searching in the thrift shops and fleas and garage sales is that you don't know what you're even gonna want until you see it. Then it becomes wonderfully obvious when you find it. (Looking "open-endededly" also increases the odds of success quite a bit!)

Yes, it's a Kostabi screenprint: "The Languor of Love", printed in 1993 by Richard Duardo at Modern Multiples.
Kostabi is a painter who became famous in the '80s as part of the East Village art scene. He is very prolific, so if you really like his work it should be easy to find. A web search will find a lot that's been written about (and by) him; here's an article from the Telegraph:

And here's one of his artnet columns:

+1
for Schioler. I have one in my kitchen. I don't know if it would be great in a formal dining room, but for a smaller, less informal space, it's hard to beat.

Thore
You could look at 'Carl Thore' designs and all the Danish makers , Fog & Morup etc?

thanks all!
for the great recommendations! i know you're right but! I do have a friend who's a designer. couldn't I just check and see what kind of pricing she can get for me before I throw in the towel and hunt for months? 🙂 a discount would make it more palatable. Although...I would love to "find" something...LOVE the Carle Thore lights - looked on etsy - and some of them going for under $400. beautiful. I have my heart set on metal.
again, thanks everyone!

You could always ask your friend for a discount on the lamp you want and then look for something else after it is installed. If you find something you like better great, sell the discounted lamp (souldn't be hard to get all your money back with the discount taken into consideration) and hang the other.
Just make sure you let your friend know your plan before hand...I'd be a little perturbed if a friend of mine used my discount and then sold it:-)
