Hey guys
I am writing a feature about Palm Springs. My question is this. Would you agree that some of the mid-century modernist buildings (such as the Albert Frey tramway gas station) blur the line between strict modernism and Googie (ie Space Age) design?
Cheers and happy new year.
Well, yeah.
The gas station -- and other Frey/Chambers designs like City Hall -- certainly have more in common with 50's bowling alleys and diners than with "strict modernist" structures like, say, the Kaufmann House.
But that's obvious just from a glance at the photos. Are you asking a deeper question?
An exception,
perhaps, to the run of local architecture would be John Lautner's Desert Hot Springs motel (1947). Lautner designed Googie's restaurant and other LA coffee shops that defined the style . . .
