Pair of console bench bookshelves - ID designer, circa date, origin, wood????..

I bought this pair of console bookshelves at a thrift store, a set of legs was missing on one shelf. I've since made new legs and stripped the horrible stain off, still working on stripping. You can see original remaining nearly black-brown stain in photo. The wood appears to be ash?? Anyone have an idea who could have designed or made/manufactured these and/or era? They have a slight japanese feel, but seem more MCM. There are a few MCM designers I've noticed that made ash pieces with dowel shape legs, such as Charlotte Perriand, ect. I would be grateful for any opinions, input. Also, opinions on refinishing, perhaps soap finish, leave blonde or stain.
