Hi! This is my first post here, and I just wanted to share pics of the pair of Selig Z Chairs I picked up this morning. When I was researching what I wanted to offer for these, I found lots of great info here on this forum. I feel like I got a pretty amazing deal at $400 for the set. They need some TLC, but in general they seem to be in great condition. Except for the front corner on one, which looks like a dog chewed it (yikes...not sure how I'm going to fix that!) I'm just going to clean them up for now and probably work on refinishing them in the summer. Supposedly they came from a Boy Scout camp, and I think they got a little too close to the campfire at least once. There is some odd looking damage on the backs, and it almost looks like they had caught on fire here and there! The cushions are shot, plus the color is not my thing. There are two online furniture companies producing reproductions of these chairs, and one offers replacement cushions for $200/set that match the dimensions of the original cushions. The price seems fair to me and they offer a huge array of upholstery choices. I live in a small town and I don't even know if we have any upholstery places, so finding an online source seemed kind of exciting.Anyway, I just wanted to share my chairs! I love them!

I almost think we're going to have to round off both corners and just cut away the damage. I know that's sacriledge with a valuable vintage chair, but because of the way the cushions sit, the chewed part is a place you would always be able to see. It's an unfortunate bit of damage, that's for sure.
Joybird and Thrive Furniture are both making reproductions of the Z chair, and both offer the cushions. Joybird's aren't listed on their website yet, but I emailed them to confirm that they do offer cushions. They are both charging $200 and I believe they both have free shipping.
Joybird's measurements are 18"x22" back and 22"x23" seat.
Thrive's measurements are 18"x22" back and 22"x24-1/4" seat.
My chair's cushions are 17x22 and 22x22, so I think Joybird's would work the best. Plus Joybird has a much larger array of upholstery choices. I got swatches from them and there are several choices that I'm in love with. If I do end up ordering from them, I will report back with pictures!
Oh my.
Consider not rounding off the corners. The bite marks were probably caused by a nervous little scout, and should be left as-is. And the burn adds character. Plus, I'd sniff out a local upholstery shop. That way you could support a local business and possibly meet a new friend. Now, out of respect for your spinet piano, please remove the plant.
Best,
Aunt Mark
I don't mind bite marks that much as well. There are also ways to soften their appearance without trying to make them disappear. Here is a before/after shot of an Ulferts dining chair restoration project. I added a little wood glue/fine-sawdust/stain paste to these bite marks after cleaning, then sanded down a bit. After re-oiling, the marks look better but still visible. Would have been even less noticable if I was a better stain mixer.
Here are pictures of the damaged corner. It's more like it was eaten, not just chewed. Poor chair. This might explain more of why I was thinking the corners may need to be rounded off. But I'll definitely have a professional look at it before I do anything to it.
My Spinet likes its plant just fine, btw 🙂 It has lots of stuff underneath to make sure it doesn't leak water onto the piano.
