Installing
an OMNI system can be a huge pain. It looks so simple, but getting it right often requires you to put up a pole or two, fit a shelf, then take down a pole, reposition, repeat?.you get the idea.
First, and foremost you must have the tension springs. I have purchased many of these sets over the years and they are often missing the springs because they fall out easily when not in use. Measure your floor to ceiling height, and adjust your pole to be a couple of inches longer than this measurement. Try to fit the pole in place and see if it is sturdy enough. Once you have your desired tension, and the poles are set to the proper length, you need to do some planning. Sketch out how you'd like the pieces arranged on paper, and make sure you have all the components you need to set it up that way. Put the associated brackets on the associated poles. Put your first pole where you want it. Use something to square it up (make sure the pole/bracket is at a 90 degree angle to the wall). Have someone hold one end of a shelf up, and fit the next pole into position so that it fits perfectly.
Even if you had printed instructions from Herman Miller, I'm betting it will still require a bit of trial and error to get it perfect. It's worth the effort, though!!

Herman Miller did not make...
Herman Miller did not make the Omni. They made CSS. Herman Miller instructions are not what you need.

Mounting hooks
Hi John,
I know this is an old thread, but I was really hoping that you we're still selling the mounting hooks.
Please let me know.
Thanks!
Gijs

Hi, I'm a student from architecture in Milano (Italy), I have to draw exactly this css model from George Nelson.
Does anyone of you have some pages of the CSS instruction booklet that can help me to find measures and assembling system.
Barrympls I saw that you posted some pages of your booklet, do you still have it? It will be very helpfull for my work. in the meantime thanks to everyone for your attention,
Viviana

Here's a post for you Omni owners who are also old school turntable fans.
A local auction yesterday had a late lot listing for a "Danish Modern Wall Unit". I was unable to make the auction, but they happened to have posted an image of this lot online beforehand (see first photo). While too small to see the details of the system, it appeared to be an Omni with one of the cabinets having odd asymmetrical doors.
Upon doing a quick search, I found out that the system was indeed an Omni, and the asymmetrical doors are apparently for a very rare audio cabinet module for the system. An old eBay listing showed photos of this module in detail, as well a catalog listing that noted this module cost $230 back in the day, the most expensive Omni module in that catalog. Only a couple of other audio cabinet modules popped up in subsequent google searches.
Just curious if any of the Omni owners here were aware of the audio module, and if it really is that rare and desirable a piece to own. Oh . . . the entire 3-bay wall unit went for just $115 yesterday.
