I have a mustard arm shell. What do you mean "applied" finishes? Were these painted over, rather than dyed from the start? And why?
Perhaps there were some additional colors - maybe even one off orders. Some companies might have had large custom orders to get shells in exact colors that match their corporate identity. Believe me, working in the world of advertising, large corporations are pretty serious about their branding ... even internally within their own four walls.

Painted
Yes, the back/undersides were painted.

There was an all original painted
navy blue rope-edge on eBay a few months ago. Does anyone remember it? It was completely painted in navy blue, front and back. I assumed it was a later paint job, until the seller showed a pic of the underside, and the Zenith Checkerboard transfer label was on top of the paint. Totally original, I then thought it was a custom order. This must be what they used "factory second" or "irregular" shells for.

I love it!
Those purple...
I love it!
Those purple shells are great in my opinion... They would look nice on zinc LAR bases...
I have an armshell in the 'Terracotta' (I have seen it refered to as 'Tobacco' as well) color, which is supposedly quite rare too (not as rare as Hot Pink or Purple though...). I saw a pair on lounge H-bases go for $1800 on Ebay a year or two ago... I got it thinking it was orange, so it was a little surprised when I opened the box.

I do remember the shell you are referring to. So, I guess HM did offer the paint job on the whole shell. Besides that listing, I've only seen upholstered shells with the painted backs.

yet, it's even FUNNIER...
when someone (in this case you barry) tries to put words (in this case the word "stupid") in someone's (in this case my) mouth to make their point.

Don't get into a tizzle, Dude DAH
I was grouping 'ugly' statements with those who used the word 'stupid', and refering to people who get really rough and then say they're making a joke and no one should be affected in any way.
Words usually mean something, and I sometimes react to some usage of words that I think are inappropriate here.
Now...if you used one word and not another, Dude, than I apoligize. But I stand by the right to react to words that seem to be hurtful in the context of this forum.
OH, and by the way, Dude, saying THEY'RE UGLY in caps is about 25% more than aggressive than stating such an incorrect opinion in lower case. I believe all caps is called SHOUTING!!!!

Awesome!
I love these. I would hate to own them (hot pink...maybe) but I love that these exist. And I really love the fact that the poor seller probably has NO idea the scarcity of them. Awesome!
AND there are five days left!

Purple is the new black
Don't fear any color. We just put plum (dark purple) on an eight foot long Nelson sofa and recently got this pruple Wendell Castle chair. I don't think Alexander Girard ruled out any color. He used a pretty broad and vivid palate. If it works, it works. Whatever the color.

Geez. You're so hell bent that your rules ARE the rules. Your incessant judgement of other members' preferred method of thought expression is just as aggravating and potentially offensive than the offenses you complain about. Why do you feel the need to constantly police the manners here? Barry, I mean no offense to you, but certainly you have more things to worry with....
That being said, I really don't like purple. But I realize that it is only my preference, and that several people have used it at a great advantage. I really don't like the shade on these chairs, though. I prefer a deeper, richer shade. I can't wait to see what these babies will go for.

The price is right.....
The contestant who guesses closest to the actual final price of the chairs wins
(nothing).
I say, in this depressed economy, $3000 for the pair.

A pair of
A pair of hot pink side shells sat in the Buy-It-Now bin on eBay for a few months with a price tag of 1800. But I guess they eventually did sell.
I would guess a bit more modestly - nothing over the 1500 range - a look at modern auction houses these days shows that people aren't splurging on the must-have collectors items these days.
