I wonder what...
that little depression above thew Electrolux logo is doing there. As far as I am concerned the irritation over such a un-consistant detail overshadows the joy that the rest could bring...nothing is perfect I guess...so back to my mothers Electrolux

Eh.
They're all trying to be sleek and modern to appeal to the new wave of young buyers. I think Dyson started it, but Dyson at least has the technology to back up the looks. (Actually it's kinda clunky looking. But it SO works.)

i must say
i don't get it. first this electrolux vacuumcleaner; this a 'new' model in what i would call an american type of vacuum cleaner; here in europe we mostly use another type were the machine and 'sucking'tube are separate. never felt the need to use such american 'hoover'type since you are carrying more weight; a simple tube is leighter and easier to use. Then dyson; why the hell does everybody says this is so revolutionary? the design is simply horrifying with terrible colors (o no visually i do not want one of those in my home) and then technically; the system existed for years and tests has proven that indeed while cleaning an ordinary vacuumcleaner 'produces' more dust then the dyson but by changing or emptying the machine all the profit of the dyson is lost and even more dust is liberated with the dyson. having a garden; you can empty the dyson outside but living in an appartment the dyson is the worst possible buy. But because Dyson is sponsoring 'design'contests his name is linked to design although again this is a design 'made by an engineer' and not by a designer. I am awaiting what a starck, newson, giovanonni, lovegrove or even a rashid vacuumcleaner would look like. Since alessi started (with philips) making electrohousehold appliances; where is their vacuumcleaner!

We have the Dyson animal,...
We have the Dyson animal, and can understand the concern for the look - it is a strange beast enough without being purple. I was taken in by the technology and have not been totally unhappy with the performance, but I wonder if newer versions may not improve upon certain shortcomings - I hoped ours would break (I'd heard Dyson usually just replaces inoperable vacuums with new models) before the warranty ran out, but it's now a few days too late, knock on wood or plastic. I'm afraid our Newfoundland has given it a run for its considerable money.

It's an "upright"
vs a "canister". Didn't Dysdon make a canister version that was in some museum stores.

The little depression
Koen, the unit folds up and the 'depression' is a thickness change of the handle that allows it to snug closer to the body. it's actually a pretty cute little unit, I saw it at Target I think...

Hi Olive,
The folding mouvement is a "Z" folding so that part of the handle is actually on the top of the folded unit. It is not realy a deprsssion but the higher part is slightly raised to cover the small locking mechanism under the button that allows you to adjust the length of that part of the handle. I have never understood that kind of height adjustment in these upright units because the moment you decrease the angle between the handle and the floor the height changes. Considering that there is no "ideal angle" under which you push and pull this thing over your floor, I find these height adjustments useless. Thinking of the compactness of the folding...they could have done something to avoid the vertical part to interfere taht early with that handle on the base of the unit....I am still not impressed.
Hi Gerrit, James Dyson is a former student of Byam Shaw school of drawing and painting and of the Royal College of Art in London and as far as I know has no formal education in engineeringat all.

Dyson vac
As I recall Consumer Reports didn't think much of the Dyson purely based on it's utility as a vacuum, apparantly the suction was not as good as their marketing would lead you to believe. Good marketing though.

yes koen
as allways you are right about dyson and his education. question rises then; he is educated as a furniture designer: what were his furniture designs like? kinda memphis? respect for the man; he started a company and torns up against the big multinationals (philips, electrolux, ...). not the easiest way. but he did it.

Dyson..
My cleaning lady "Betty" says the Dyson that i bought for her is too heavy and she prefers to use the old Hoover.I showed her this post and she doesnt like the new Electrolux either!,she says it looks like a golf caddy.I think she might be stuck in some kind of time warp.

Seriously,...
I can't understand people like "Betty". As a cleaning lady this might be her "chance in a lifetime" to get a taste of the many pleasures that come with pulling and pushing a golf cart. What about a compromise Vivienne and painting your carpet green?
I know little about the Dyson. My "technical" side always liked the idea of "throwing" the dirt back and away from the suction filter, but it's bold and "screaming" design is too remote from my own ideas based on the simple assumption that unless we have modest products that serv us, we will be serving them. It is interesting though that a giant like Electrolux seems to feel compelled to take the presence of the Dyson products into account by making a bolder "Japanese-robot-like" design statement. I will stick to pulling that oversized mouse from Miele over our floor and I am going to think seriously about designing a golf cart that would be an elongated "close-to-the-green" version of my Miele....

Koen...
Betty is not understandable, she does what she wants at her own pace,i have learned over the years that this is the way!.If i suggested painting the carpet green she would find a reason not to like it.I always assume she will dissagree with me on evertning so when she sometimes does agree it is a pleasant surprise. To be honest,we both like the bottle a bit too much so she doesnt really get much cleaning done!.She has however asked to have another look at the "Golf Hoover thingy".

This seems...
a cross between an anteater and a hammerhead shark, neither of which I much want in my house.
Vacuuming stairs is already hard enough with an upright when the revolving brush is only a short distance from the rear wheels. This would make stair vacuuming with anything but the hose attachement virtually impossible. Good lord! Doesn't this designer know every time one has company, at the very last minute before they arrive, one HAS to scramble up and down the FIRST flight of stairs with the upright, when there is NO time for plugging in hoses. This desiger seems to have never lived in a two story house, OR holds a metaphysical notion of human nature. 🙂
