Hi I just bought a George Nelson 60 slat clock model 2291.I was wondering if it is really common.
The clock it self is minty except the minute hand needs to be repaired it just spins loosely. Is there a place one can recommend I can have it sent to be repaired ,or at least somewhere I could find a replacement hand.
I will appreciate any help you can offer.
I didn't bother taking a photo but I will include a link to wright to show you the clock I am talking about.
What a sweet find!
I...
What a sweet find!
I would see if you can have the hand repaired (by someone who knows what they are doing) and not replaced (I'm not sure if Vitra ever reissued this hand regardless)
My vote is to always keep these clocks in as original condition as possible. As this clock is a very rare version, I wouldn't replace the movement, the hands or anything else. Others might advocate a different approach.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it?
great find pee-king
That is one of the harder to come by Nelson clocks. $5000 would not be an outrageous auction price. I have only seen this one go thru auction less than 5 times in the last 10 yrs. and have never seen one on Ebay. I just recently bought one online from a New York store. Jumped on it right away. I would judge it even rarer than an Eyeclock, and even more so than the Flock of Butterflies clock or some of the Motion -Notion clocks. I seen one sell once thru Wright auctions that had different hands. They were the same hands that are on the Ball clock, but those are the wrong hands. The hands on this 60 Slat clock are very unique in the fact that they are creased/bent at an angle right down the middle. No other Nelson clock shares this clock's hand design. The big circle on the minute hand dips down into the grove on the face of the clock as it travels around. Ingenious! It is a very sculptural clock, especially when viewed for the side. Evokes Louise Nevelson sculptures for me. One of the bigger clocks too, 25 inches across. Not sure who designed it for George Nelson Associates, but if I had to guess, I would say Irving Harper maybe. Be proud of that one. I only know of one other Nelson clock collector that has this one (and he has 2!).
Thank-you very much.
Thank-you very much for all your help.Does anybody here know of a competent clock repair shop who may be able to repair the minute hand.I wouldn't mind sending it anywhere in North America if they could repair it correctly.I know that where I live they would probably destroy the thing.
