Hey guys -- I'm thinking about getting the Nelson Eye Clock (or maybe the Sunflower Clock -- I haven't really decided). Naturally, I'd prefer one from the Howard Miller run, however, since it's one of the less common Nelson clocks, prices are out of my range. So I'm stuck with a Vitra reissue or nothing.
So here's my question -- are the Vitra reissues up to snuff? I mean, with the exception of the battery pack (which I hate incidentally -- I'd much prefer the electrical cord) -- how accurate of a reproduction are these things? Do they use plastic where they're supposed to use metal? etc. (These question apply to Vitra reisues of all Nelson clocks, not just the Eye Clock.) Well, hope to hear your opinions on this. Thanks,
Brian
Of the 5 we have.....
We have 5 Nelson Vitra clocks(turbine, Ball, Starburst,Eye, and Kite) and they are all made of Metal and wood. I just looked them over and the only plastic I could find is the auctual clock guts(holds battery). I'm unsure if they are exactly the same as the original, but they are solid. I prefer the battery, i'm able to place them where I want without the cord. I was also able to purchase 5 Vitra for the price of 1 original. The eye clock is really nice, my favorite, it was way nicer in person. Good luck!
go for the Eye
I have a collection of 20+ Nelson for Howard Miller clocks. And only 1 Vitra repro -- the Eye clock. Always loved this one, but the going auction rate of $3000+ was something I was never going to spend.
The repro Eye is a particular good one, I think. Well-constructed, and I think identical to the original. A large and substantial thing.
Some of the repros don't look as good to me as the originals, though. I'm not crazy about the Ball clocks, e.g. But when the originals of some cost in the $thousands, well, the repros start looking better.
Am considering buying, e.g., the Vitra edition of the desk version of the Kite clock (now called the "Diamond" desk clock). Could never afford the original, but what a clock!
Vitra special edition Nelson clock for MOMA
I came across this Watermelon clock and was just reminded of it. I like the colors.

Wow, that special Watermelon...
Wow, that special Watermelon clock is nice! I've always been a bit puzzled to why Vitra decided to launch it in such a boring colour-combination (grey/black). Why not purple/orange or yellow/dark green like the originals? This new colour-sheme suits the clock much better, though I wished it came with black legs instead of white.
as requested
OK - here are some photos of my clocks. (I'm new to this Flickr thing, so hopefully the link works).
There isn't anything particularly rare in the collection; in fact, if I had to do it over again, I'd rather have 3 or 4 really rare ones. But such is the typical collector experience -- we all learn too late ...
Anyone else want to share their collection ... ?
