I just purchased a set of Bertoia Diamond Chairs that had been left outside for the last several yrs. I didn't notice it until I got home, but when you get within a couple of feet of them you start to smell a horrible rotten egg like odor. when you get up close to the metal it's even worse and really horrible. I was planning on putting a spray paint primer on and then spray painting the chairs and was wondering if after I do this the smell will still be there or if there is some other way I can get rid of it...HELP!

DONT SPRAY PAINT!
It'll just crumble off eventually. If you want them redone, I think powder coating is the best way. And prior to do this, the company will burn off all the old coating. It will not stink after that.

i've spray painted a number in the past and the paint holds up amazingly well over time (and at $3 per chair vs $200-300 per chair it's a bit more practical)
the only thing i care about is the smell. will the paint cover the smell, and if not, what can i do to get rid of it.
J.

How intriguing.
Maybe they came into contact with a skunk at some point in their life? Or the previous owners lived next to a paper mill? Put them in the bathtub with tomato juice. Or white vinegar.
Where are all the chemists out there? I seem to remember from 10th grade chemistry that rotten egg smell=sulfur. True?

i will be spraying on the febreze this afternoon! cross your fingers.
and yes rotten egg smell does likely equal some level of sulfur, so if there are any chemists that know how to remedy the problem please chime in

Hi
I find it hard to believe the metal could carry an odor for long. Take it to the car wash, and give it a spray clean with hot soapy water.
I would think a cover for the chair would carry an odor, but you are not talking about the cover are you?

"My bertoia chairs stink"
easy solution.......
before you fart, get up off the bertoia chairs and go to the kitchen, make a sandwich, fart, then go back to sitting on the bertoia chairs.
if you follow this easy plan you bertoia chairs shall stink no longer.....
