Don't
listen to Robert Hughes; he's the one who complained that the Red/Blue chair isn't "comfortable" -- as if the point of this famous chair was comfort ! (In fact, the chair has a quite pleasant seating posture, and is as comfortable as any flat-surface chair can be.) The man is a blowhard, in my opinion -- an art critic who likes the sound of his own voice.
Most visitors to Fallingwater enjoy the sound of the waterfall. It is designed as a weekend house.
Wright acknowledged that his proportions were based on his own height. Wright lovers enjoy the difference in ceiling height between entrances and living rooms; it is one of the spacial qualities that define Wright's mastery.
Fallingwater, because of its horizontal, layered design and thick masonry floors and ceilings, has less dramatic variations in ceiling height than most of Wright's houses.
I agree with SDR
...on Fallingwater that is. Depending on the season the water can be quite present (early spring) to almost unnoticable in late summer. But Inever though it could be a nuisance. In spring time it gives you the feeling of being part of a larger system of natural forces, in which you enjoy the protection of a warm natural space. The lowe ceiling is indeed a masterfull thought about the passage between the entrance, the living room and the large terrasse. The feeling when stepping outside is a wonderfull experience worth the trip to the Pennsylvania woods. Try to plan it for the time the dogwood is flowering (I suspect it's the large flowered Cornus florida)It is a wonderfull experience. I agree that the architectural model of the MoMA are exceptional, but the real thing is so much more.
toys are good
william-holden-caulfield,
I assume you are talking about the Lego Fallingwater construction kit. This is a fun toy at a reasonable retail price. I gave my sister (a FLW fan) one for Christmas. I beleive it sits in the original packaging unopened on a book shelf.
My favorite construction toy is the Marklin Eiffel Tower 100th annviversary construction kit - number 1089. The highest quality German construction with great packaging.
Toys for "big boys" are good.
