"Since you insist on making...
"Since you insist on making it personal, please do yourself a favor and swing down from the trees, find some shoes, and purchase some Depend® products. This may help when you are at the liquor cabinet.."
Why so touchy? The poster was asking us if we thought that using a really beautiful, but uncomfortable solution was a good idea for guests. I gave my two cents. I DO think the "personal" aspects of my argument has EVERYTHING to do with good vs. bad design.
And you suggest that I am some undignified caveman? Yet you are the one so inclined to value beauty and design pedigree over being a good host? One of the very things that separate us from our animal friends is our ability to show empathy for others - AKA the desire to meet their expectations of pleasure and comfort, for example. Might you be underdeveloped lacking this feature? So perhaps you are the caveman no?
Design is very "personal." Well, good design is. It values the end user. You can argue with that all you want. Perhaps the rift between us is just our preference ... yours for beautiful objects that are hopefully useful and mine for useful objects that are hopefully beautiful.
Indeed, spike...
The rift is a fundamental one in general approach to design. We as users or "functionalists?" if you will are generally put off by the crass, haughty vision of those like Ark who seem to value nothing aside from form. It's a very disturbing outlook really. Whereas design is supposed to be a means to make life work while enriching our lives aesthetically, the aforementioned seem to think design is for pretty things to fit, or moreover cram their lives into. It's a very strange bit of tunnel vision. Can't seem to see the forest for the trees, can they?
my apology
Okay whitespike, enough already. I apologize for any hurt feelings and/or misunderstanding.
I should mention that my mother (yes I have one - age 76) and my sister (age 55) both find the Maya Lin, Longitude chaise longue for Knoll Studio® very comfortable and I find the Poul Kjærholm, PK80 leather bench for Fritz Hansen sleeps well in a pinch.
spelling error
Robert as strange as it may seem I do value the fact that you noticed and brought to my attention my spelling error. This I believe is positve criticism and not a value judgement.
The use of ® (Racol) when using a registered trademark in print is the correct form.
As for, named after food, I am fortunate to be able to satisfy most of my desires in design based on ?dynamic change? to achieve the elegant or stylish look I require without concern for petty and/or narrow minded opinions. Easter is upon us so it may now be time to climb off the cross.
