Based on some recent threads, I thought it might be good to create a thread for mid century chair skeletons. Could be helpful to have them all in one place for easy access.
I'll kick things off with a book photo of a very rare Hans Wegner Roman (Upholstered Bull) Chair and an Ox Chair made by Johannes Hansen and AP Stolen respectively.
very nice chair, teakhound. I thought I was familiar with all of the higher end Finn Juhl chairs, but I had not come across this one before.
Interesting metal bracket detail between the backrest and seat. Makes structural sense with the existing wood framing design to provide a third support point for the backrest, but not what I would have expected from FJ.
cdsilva – The only chairs by Finn Juhl I have owned to date include this pair of BO-116s and a pair of Diplomat chairs. Both designs have similar metal brackets connecting the seat bottom to the seat back, though the Diplomat (France and Son) had steel brackets, not brass.
And you're right, this is not a common design from Juhl. My internet searching has unearthed one set of eight that sold at auction years ago, a single for sale currently, and another single that popped up in LA a few months ago. While interesting to look at and very comfortable, I suspect that the reason for its relative obscurity it that it is not a particularly sturdy chair. The back brace and front legs are thin and subject to a decent amount of load when one gets into and out of the chair. Not sure many examples have survived.
And thanks for sharing that catalog except. I suspected that this should have brass standoffs on the seat back. Will need to order some brass stock and fabricate two pairs...
teakhound--you probably know that you can buy short lengths of brass tubes in different diameters, right? I recently bought some for a totally different reason and thought about how they'd be perfect for cutting replacements for just these parts on chairs.
For anyone who's interested, Ace Hardware sells them online with free pickup at your local store.
