I`m sure he has been discussed on the forum already but I have to say after visiting several furniture stores in London recently Matthew Hiltons designs have really caught my eye.
If I was forced to buy brand new furniture I`m sure I would end up with a few of his pieces.
The Balzac chair he designed in the 90`s has to be one of the most comfortable chairs I have sat in although I don`t find it that aesthetically pleasing.
It would appear his latest designs are heavily influenced by mid century Danish designers like Kai Kristiansen and Hans Wegner, follow the link if you are not familiar with his work.
I've
I've only seen a few of his pieces in person - the Cross Extension table and the matching chair that DWR carries. I have to say - I haven't totally wrapped my head around his aesthetic. I'm happy that he's not being too derivative of others, but at the same time I'm not 100% confortable with where he's going.
There's a certain monumentalism present in much of his work - especially in the chunky, blocky legs that frequently appear. While it works in a table scale (love the Light Table, for example), I dont always feel that it's well reconciled in the chair form. The Columbo chair feels especially block and weird. Of course - I have no idea how the chairs actually feel - maybe their comfort will overcome their awkwardness.
I Love Matthew's work
- he's one of the greats of our age in my opinion. His designs have real integrity and 'truth to materials'
We were at college together; he was great then, and still is.
Britain, for all its pedigree of great talent has given us fairly few stand-alone designers in the last couple of decades, Jasper Morisson springs to mind as another.. Tom Dixon too ...
