I'm gonna pull a tinyarmada here...
Please show me proof (or provide a credible reference) that the LAR base was a direct replacement for the LAX base.

@Grendel
There is a lounge height H base. It is lower and has a reclined angle like the previous X base.

I've been considering doing what the op suggested and modify a dining height h-base. Would anyone with a LAX be willing to take a few measurements for me? Front and rear legs to the top of the bend.

Would that be something for an auto body shop or for a welder to do?
Also its my birthday, feel free to post some virtual gifts!

Did anybody see the original cats cradle chair on Roadshow?
I think the appraiser undervalued it.

i just watched it on the PBS site and
i agree that the appraiser undervalued it considering that it's a zenith piece with what seems to be an original low rod base.

Well in that case
You don't know what you're talking about either.
Go do some research and educate yourself.

Well it's pretty simple, pirate...
If you and fox are so educated beyond Google, why don't you go ahead and drop some knowledge on us?
Speculation spouted as fact is still speculation in the end.

Grendel
To address your original question, Lunchbox is correct. The LAR is nice to look at, but difficult to live with. I'm 6'4" and I'd rather sit on the floor than struggle with a cat's cradle base Eames chair. The LAX, MAX and even the SAX I find very comfortable. When the seat is pitched and the pressure is taken off your bottom and put on your lower back, it makes the hard fiberglass chair much more comfortable. Additionally, you show a seating group with a sofa and other chairs. if you have a couple LARs the seat height will be much lower than the rest of the group and I think would look odd.
Just my two cents.

Admittedly
I don't sit in mine that often, but I don't find it uncomfortable either.

Just noticed these two on ebay - shows a pretty good contrast in the bases if you want to cut one down.
