I am also looking for information on this George Nelson/Herman Miller table. It does have the tag but I have not been able to find another example like it or any other information on it. I'm guessing I haven't find the right description/name to search on to find what I need. Also any idea what it is worth?
Thanks,
Dennis

the clue is...
right there, try searching for Nelson X leg table...
As for the chairs, they are real...and old... I think pre-55. There are some very knowledgeable DA'ers on Eames chairs, woodywood comes to mind immediately. Perhaps he or someone else will shed more light for you, or perhaps you will find the information with a little more research.
Nice table!

I'll try again....
I had no luck yesterday searching on Nelson and X-Leg. I was really hoping I had found the missing piece of info when I found the x-leg reference but it didn't help. I'll try again tomorrow, maybe I'll have better luck.
As for the chairs I've found more tonight then I did yesterday but nothing as detailed as I need. At first, due to the lack of any labels or tags I assumed they were not really but after last nights research I was starting to believe they are real plus the story about the chairs being used by owners when they were young (now they are over 50) adds to the evidence. Not sure when this design was first copied by others but I'm guessing not that early.
Thanks for the info and I'll keep searching.

For certain
the chairs are authentic...
The x base, foot glides, large shock mounts, and lack of any label denotes an earlier chair.
There has been a discussion on the forum about the 3 raised dots on the bottom, but I am unable to locate the thread. I believe they symbolize Zenith Plastics but I am not 100% certain.
I have a pair of Eames chairs with different bases that have no markings and are also stamped with an ax as yours are, mine are circa 1955, yours are older than mine.
Hope that helps a little...

Nelson Dining Table
Your table is called the Oval Soft Edge Curved Dining Table Model 5259. Designed for Herman Miller in 1953.

Thanks for the Table Name
That is exactly what I was looking for on the table name/model. Now I should be able to find what I need. Any idea on the value?

I had a theory on the AX marking on the chairs (related posting)
I was thinking the AX marking might be a production process aid to distinguish chairs that had mounts glued on for x-base versus another type of base. Of course I was making the assumption that the shock mount configuration were slightly different for each type of base (and not obvious just by looking). It would make sense to mark the chair at the shock mount gluing stage to delineate which type of base needed to be attached at the next step. So at this stage of the process the chair is only an AX, and will only become a DAX, SAX, or LAX at the last stage.
But if you have chairs with different bases also marked AX then my theory is wrong.
Back to the think tank.

nelson x-base table
i found mine with the rosewood top/black edge/black x-base ca.1951 over a decade ago for a mere $75 with four queen anne style chairs (courtesy of the thrift store where i found it) included. i sold the four queen anne style chairs online for $100, a dealer in los angeles at the same time was asking for the exact table as mine for $7000. to this day, i still wonder how the dealers or fellow collectors missed it in this age of information overload.
you should see a copy of any books/reprints of herman miller catalogs from the period published by schiffer or if you have access to period copies of arts & architecture and interiors magazines from when the table was introduced.

Dining Set up for auction tomorrow
I'll let everyone know what the table/6 chair set sells for tomorrow. I probably will only be able to afford an opening bid and then sit back and watch.
