I'm gutting my office (computers don't need the 200lb steel workstations for the 80 pound monitors of the 80's) and I'm adding a day bed to make the room multi purpose. I'm looking for one more or less like this sketch I made below. Chrome legs, wood frame and foam cushions. The back cushions just sit and can be tossed on the floor if a guest wants to sleep, otherwise it's a sofa to watch TV on the Mac. It's sort of like a Barcelona day bed but with back cushions and covered in something like a gerard fabric, not leather. No back support needed as it will sit against the wall. Any suggestions? If I found a barcelona type daybed but not in leather or with no cushions I can have the cushions made.

Daniel Donnelly
in Alexandria, Virginia (www.danieldonnelly.com) will custom build you a daybed like the one you have described above.
I recently ordered the Modernica case study sofa through them. Initially, I was concerned about the hairpin legs messing up my hardwood floors. Daniel (or was that Donnelly?) told me that they can have the bed built with regular stainless steel legs. Ultimately, though, I ended up going with the hairpin legs.
A friend of a friend of mine is having a daybed and a queen size bed custom made by danieldonnelly.
The craftsmanship of their own manufactured products is reputed to be excellent.
I don't think it would hurt to send them an email.
David

your daybed
looks like the Peter Hvidt daybed which is readily available at around 1000USD. Why reinvent the wheel?

i agree
It looks almost identical to that and the Modernica (Nelson reissue). That is such a classic daybed design there are those and many no-names designed in that manner. I am sure you can find what you are looking for already made.
I would suggest using back support. Why not have them just because you have a wall. It seems faulty. What if you want to use them elsewhere one day? What if the bottom slides on the floor? The back support not only performs the obvious function, but the bolsters (back cushions) are snapped to it to keep them from sliding.
Charles Eames said "Innovate as a last resort." This wheel has been made many times over. There is a reason they are made as they are and, more importantly, a reason why many designs have ended up with this same practical solution.

The Wheel V 2.0
I have no desire to reinvent the wheel, if anyone sees one of these for sale somewhere let me know. I've found nothing on ebay or any of the usual sources yet. I avoid 1stdibs.com as that basically demands my left nut or the cash equivalent.

Never heard of 1stdibs.com
So I just went to the site - the president and founder of 1stdibs.com is one fine looking man!
(Though not as fine as Daniel Craig, the BEST Bond ever, or the French member of Il Divo).
FYI (returning to the topic of the original post) - James, the cost of the custom daybed at Daniel Donnelly is about the same as the Modernica case study bed - the 1700-2000.

I didn't think the
1700-2000 price point was unreasonable -that's pretty much the price of a standard sofa at C&B or Room and Board.
I did look on ebay for quite a while before I ended up purchasing mine. With shipping and reuphostery, the price of a hvidt or wegner daybed would have been about the same as what I spent at Daniel Donnelly. (The Wegner daybeds, in particular, are very nice - I would have gotten one from ebay but for the fact that that it was too long.)
Also, there seems to be a lot of people looking on ebay for eames/mid-century modern daybeds. So competition for the nicer ones can be quite stiff and, as a result, expensive.

James, I don't know where one is, but...
this sketch of yours is exactly what I was talking about for a DA improvement. Posting it made me get it immediately. And it makes the thread look cool too. Thanks.
