Yes, I believe early production of the desk had solid drawer fronts, with the pulls and dovetails carved out of the solid piece. Mine is later production (seller's uncle bought it new in the 70's), with veneered fronts, and pulls made from a separate piece of wood.
No nitpicking from me though. Easily the best craigslist find I've ever had. Quite a few things fell into place for me this morning to beat out the local dealers who do this full time. I needed a couple of beers during lunch to calm myself down afterwards.
spanky, you may well be right about the wood. I just never think of cherry for mid century woods. My head always spins during the Eames chair wood ID threads, as so many of those grain patterns look alike to me. I'll happily live with the Peabody ignorance, as it's more than offset by the Ditzel rosewood ID.
Cdsilva: I think the Peabody / Nemschoff chairs (nice btw) are likely Elm wood. It is the zig zaggy grain characteristic of a Elm that makes me think this.
Take a look at the solid Elm furniture that a Ercol made, and I think you will recognize the wood. Also, I believe the lighter wood in Lane Acclaim is Elm. You will see the same fine dark zig zags in the grain.
This little Hans Bølling duckling is not my most recent acquisition. I actually got it 4-5 years ago, a gift from some dear friends. But then I moved twice in the space of 3 years and then finally unpacked in my new home, he was nowhere to be found! I didn't even realize it until a year later because I'd never really put it on display. I looked everywhere and finallly decided that I must have thrown him out with the packing paper. I felt sick.
Then while going through work stuff in long-term storage in my kid's garage, I found one box that was supposed to have gone to my home. Et voila! Ducky! Rescued from his musty exile! I think I was happier than when I first got him.
One of my best thrifting weekends EVER!
First off, this vinyl daybed / sofa in great condition. Its long enough for me to stretch out on and fits perfectly in an awkward pass through space in my house (picture #2).
Second, a 50th anniversary Knoll coffee table. I had just started considering something like it for my living room, never dreaming I’d find the real thing within my budget!
Thank you Objectworship!
The coffee table may however be cursed, everything around it looks ugly by comparison. Its presence is really motivating me to finally paint the room, and after that tear up the carpet, and then restore the trim, and then...
I understand the Whincester House
Over the weekend, my Paul McCobb Custom Craft sofa arrived. I acquired the McCobb lounge chair and the side table a few weekends ago while traveling to see a friend. The no-sag springs sag but, inside the back of the chair was a remnant of Riverdale, "Cross Wedge". I went crazy when I found it.
Grendel The Cat,
Nice table. You also have some other nice pieces in your photos.
Do not concern yourself with paint. Even Benjamin Moore is inexpensive compared to furniture and accessories. Continue to buy when the price is correct for you and paint when there is nothing else to purchase.
Congratulations on the Knoll 50th anniversary coffee table.
Thanks Niceguy!
I've bought the paint already, and awesomely, it was more $ than anything in both those rooms with the exception of the sofas!
The problem is that I'm very lazy, terrible painter. I firmly believe you can't paint without whiskey and it goes quickly downhill from there.
...and awesome screen! I think we should do followups if our photos don't show where the items landed in our homes.
I am incredibly happy with my new coffee table! Børge Mogensen for Søborg Møbelfabrik. I love the upturned edges. Solid teak top. White oak legs.
And this seems to be a very rare design as I can only find one other anywhere on the internet. And I've never seen the matching(?) chairs or the sofa that it was presented with in the 1956 Fredericia Furniture Fair.
Edit: forgot to mention that I found it in my wife's chiropractor's office. Had been sitting there for 50+ years. I traded a Lane Acclaim table for it.
