I have a friend with a two-seater looking like this chair. The leather-fiber (?) straps were failing, so I replaced them with panels of 3/8 plywood. The seat is firmer now, of course -- but for a knock-off and not much budget, I figured it was the right solution. Always reversable in the future, of course . . .
Spanky,
I'm going to try and restore them the best I can (clean off as much flaking as possible and condition whats left?) Or have a friend who does upholstery make some plain, untufted cushions in tweed/wool like fabric (as a price saver, for the cushions to match my Danish chairs a little better, and as knock offs I don't mind doing something completely unauthentic with them!)
SDR,
Nice work! I've done the plywood thing for the bottoms of a few Danish chairs. I'd suggest taking it a step further and wrapping the wood in fabric (both for esthetics and to keep the cushions from possibly snagging on the wood)
edited- the cat distratced me.
I like that idea with the cushions, some copies definitely better than others.
I saw a movie once that I think was filmed at IIT and the barcelona in that didnt have straps but a wide red cordoroy belt like a deck chair and unbuttoned red cord cushions, It looked cool but I'd try brown belts and grey wool or black belts with houndstooth,
hit up some local thrift malls today and found a pair of fance and son teak side tables designed by tove & edvard kindt-larsen. model 510
this is not a common find for my area and i had to contain my excitement when checking out with the stupidly low price of what they were
these tables were spared by the furniture gods! as everything else in that particular vendor's alloted space was that horribule upcycled niche painted furniture including what looked like something in the style of heywood wakefield and also a crendeza by lane. but these didnt escaped unhamed, some finished was applied, poorly i might add in some areas when it pooled up on the bottom side and bottom of legs, that will need to be removed but all tags and labels are there!
Verner Panton for Fritz Hansen, System 1-2-3 Model E+P (low back chair + removable arms). Still has the original Miralastic fabric which was designed by Panton, and in good condition.
It's not really my style, but I couldn't help myself. So it is going away.
And my god it is orange.
Very nice. When I see visible fasteners on one plane of a piece -- and I believe such fasteners are an excellent means of construction -- I wonder if the piece was delivered to the dealer disassembled. "Flat-pack" is the current term, I guess. A pair of lounge chairs shown on another thread were similarly equipped.
If so, is it clear how the legs are attached to the top in a removable way, on this table ?
