...best left alone
Unfortunately leaving them alone was fine when I bought them 20+ years ago. Now the fabric has completely worn through at the edges and exposing the crumbling foam and fiberglass. I just want to take it apart and see what's involved to possibly just stretch some new material over the seat/back insert.
The way
that style might be realized today, could involve wrapping a shaped and padded sheet of stiff but thin material -- possibly a piece of Sintra ? -- which could be attached to the shell with Velcro -- or with a more permanent adhesive. While you will likely destroy the existing upholstery system in removing it, you will be able to see what was done, and hopefully devise a reasonable replacement, perhaps in consultation with a recommended upholsterer. If you were lucky, the sub-layer might be removed intact.
What I was advising against was the expectation of cleanly removing the upholstery and finding a shiny and smooth surface beneath.
Naturally, the first step would be to get whatever advice you can, from the original manufacturer. Best of luck with this project.
