..."I like half of the Witco pieces...isn't it a shame nothing's been written about the company?"
Check out "Tiki Modern... and the wild world of Witco".

Folk Art is good.
African sculpture is good.
Everything made by "Witco", however, is very, VERY bad.
Doesn't everyone tire of kitsch by the time they've reached their mid-twenties? You start out embracing this rubbish out of a perverse sense of superiority (how many times have I heard the tired hipster refrain, "It's so bad it's good! I love it!"), but in time your taste becomes so corrupted that you can no longer discern what's actually good.
Beg to differ
I'm sorry, but I'll take the llama.

I think Girard...
Whitespike
I think Girard did modern primitivism. Inspired or directly influenced by "folky" design of ages past and reapplied them into a modern language.
Danish modern is another example of that. Traditional...even french, but distinctly modern.
Sinuous forms of Kagan...
Eames, Nelson, Wright...inspired by Japan
on and on
But when we isolate folk and modern... I think it can become jarring when the two present themselves independently.
