Hello Everyone, I just picked up this gorgeous John Stewart Inc. signed lounge chair. I was curious if anyone knows the designer. Did John Stewart himself do all of the designing?

Really? If we're talking...
Really? If we're talking the same Stewart, I thought it was Jimmy Stewart who designed in between acting roles. Notably departing the design world while filming for "It's A Wonderful Life".
IF Stuart Smally...that's another thing entirely.

so
was john stuart just the manufacturer? And other folks designed for the JS Label?
I was looking at a JS chair yesterday (which I probably should buy) but am a bit bewildered as to what I am dealing with

American distributor
I did a quick google search and found this at the top of the first page of results:
"John L. Stuart started John Stuart, Inc. in 1934 with his partners Herbert M. Rothschild and Herman S. Gelbin. Stuart also owned the famous John Widdicomb Company. The Stuart showroom became one of the premier Modern Show rooms in the world showing Scandinavian designs. It was the only air-conditioned showroom in NYC in 1940."

yes
I saw that too.
they labeled all of their stuff as John Stuart. SO, yes, it ws simply a show room but it purchased, sold stuff from other designers.

my point
which I guess I am not making well is
I see something marked John Stuart
What do I know? I don't know the designer, correct? Or the manufacturer. So really all it tells me is that John Stuart labeled it.
I think

Right. John Stuart, Inc was ...
Right. John Stuart, Inc was the distributor, meaning they bought from various companies in Denmark or wherever and then sold them out of their showroom in NYC and maybe by catalog to other parts of the country.
You could probably find a vintage John Stuart, Inc catalog if you looked long and hard enough. That would help in identifying who designed the furniture they sold. Or just get a few good books on Scandinavian furniture and study up so that you can ID things on sight. You'll be surprised at how much more you notice when you're out and about.

Thanks
ok, I really appreciate your response
By and by, the ITEM is a black leather lounge chair with matching ottoman.
Drove 50 miles to check it out again and DIDN'T buy it. A little too much money and it had the feel of being more recent. I may still buy it as I am at this store alot, but I would like to pay a little less. Cuz I am CHEAP
