Hello all,
I acquired this chair a while ago, but I don't know much about it. I like its finish - it's matt and the colour is quite nice (is it walnut?). The chair is solid, but the back shock mount feels like it should be tightened against the back rest - but I'm afraid that if I try to do that, I might strip the screws, so it's left a bit loose...
Could anyone venture as to its authenticity and age?
Thanks!
PS. For those interested in lamps, I posted this some time ago, and would love to learn more - maybe someone would like to give it a stab?

Hi Catfish,
you seem to have a very nice piece there. I'd guess it's a walnut as well. With the 5-2-5 screw pattern on the bottom, I think yours is probably at least 60 years old and it looks to be in excellent condition. One thing I find a little "off" is the placement of the bottom shock mounts. Usually they aren't visible from that angle, but yours stand out pretty far. The attached picture is mine and you can't see the mounts. It's not to say that's a red flag, but something that stands out to me. If you can take a closer shot of the spine of the chair from the side, it'll be helpful for the more experienced members to comment on authenticity. So far, my vote is it's wonderful authentic piece.
Also, if you plan on actually using the chair, I'd suggest that you try to tighten the screw; otherwise, it may create more problems for the screw hole in the future as it continues to have excessive room to move around.

Hi kin,
Thanks so much for your reply, I was beginning to think I might be hexed 😉
Yes, I've also noticed that on my chair, the "underside" of the centre backrest piece ends flush with the transverse piece of the front legs and as you can see, the shock mounts stick out quite a bit. Hmmm, this is obviously very different than what you have on your chair.
You mention that you'd like to see the back piece from the side - is it to see the plywood layers? I'll try to take such a pic.
I will try to see about tightening the loose screws on the back shock mount. The chair is definitely used from time to time.
Thanks again!

Looks very nice to this Eames-novice's eyes: 5-2-5 screws, oval back shockmount, and I believe I can see a tapered ply in the spine in the second photo, although that may be due to peripheral distortion from the camera lens. I'm also assuming that the darkened edges on the wood is from years of use and not from someone staining it.
Now, just make sure you don't scrub it with a belt sander.

I took a picture of the chair from the side - is this what you had in mind?

Thanks, woody.
What would you say re. age? And what about the strange spine/leg situation?

Hi
Looks like Evans production, late 1940s. Where did you get it, may I ask?

Like cdsilva said, the tapering of the ply as it moves from horizontal to vertical looks to be present although its not as prominen as other ones I've personally seen.

Ha! Sorry Woody, I had to laugh, the way things are with collectors now that sounded like asking the high school pot dealer where he gets his weed.
Lovely chair, don't mind me.

Thanks for all your comments!
I've been looking at pictures of chairs of similar vintage, and some seem to have comparable spine - front leg positioning (both pieces aligned at the front).
I have not seen shock mounts placed like they are on mine, however. Is it possible - if this is indeed a genuine early chair - that at some point the shock mounts were repositioned toward the front? Sounds pretty far-fetched to me, but what do I know...
Woody - I found the chair on ebay.

I think your shockmounts are ...
I think your shockmounts are in the right position. It just they are exposed due to the fact that your spine (actually I think coccyx would be more a propos) does not extend as far as the typical example.

Good point, cdsilva. As I looked at that picture again, it seems as though the screws don't go directly into the center of the bottom shock mounts? It's probably just the angle of the shot but it sure looks a bit off. More pictures of the screws and shock mounts might be helpful.

Hi guys,
I've brought chair into better light and took some more pics. In the process, I've re-discovered that I'm a really lousy photographer - most of these were out of focus and generally useless.
Do these shed any light?
